[Newsphopick=Kingsley Lim] Climate change issues have been scorned by Donald Trump. According to Trump, climate change was never an issue to begin with. At a World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump says that “we must reject the prophets of doom and their predictions of apocalypse”, suggesting the climate change alarmists are blowing the matter out of proportion.
If one were to form an opinion on the president based on his remarks made to the media, one would get a general idea of how important the matter is to the current U.S. administration. He uses words like ‘hoax’ and ‘non-existent’ to make climate change matters seem unimportant. Whatever the case may be, Trump does not seem too interested in climate change policies. In fact, he is distancing himself from them.
Trump’s political opponent, Joe Biden wants to make sure that climate change issues are dealt with
However, it is good to know that Trump’s adversaries have a different take on the matter. In a July 14 speech, Joe Biden outlined his plan to combat climate change and stimulate economic growth.
Biden began his speech by saying that if America cannot deal with the public health crisis, it is not going to be able to handle the economic crisis where millions of American jobs are at stake. He added that the perpetuation of the health crisis and the economic crisis would affect the country’s ability to deal with the current climate crisis.
“We can’t deal with the climate crisis that could cast us into an even darker and more permanent shadow that would loom over the country in the world for a long time. We won’t be able to do what Americans have always done” said Biden.
So far, the coronavirus pandemic has affected the lives of more than three million Americans. In addition to that, America has suffered 135,000 casualties thus far. 19 states across the country have reported more than 15000 cases in a single day. If these numbers are a scorecard of sorts, Donald Trump and his administration have failed his people.
Trump should set a good example for the people
Joe Biden has even gone on record to suggest that the current American president set a good example for people. For months on end since the onset of the virus in the country, Trump had refused to wear a mask, while dispensing fallacious advice on the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat patients with the coronavirus.
According to the World Health Organization, hydroxychloroquine’s effectiveness is questionable because the desired outcome has not been statistically proven from a scientific perspective. This has been not only embarrassing but also one of Trump’s failures in handling the coronavirus crisis.
Climate change issues will become a challenge over the next decade
However, the highlight of Biden’s speech was his willingness to take climate issues head on, unlike the current president. This matter is perhaps the single most important issue of decade as it affects all global citizens. As such, Biden’s statements on climate change are largely seen as positive by environmental activists.
Biden said “And there’s no more consequential challenge that we must meet in the next decade than the onrushing climate crisis. Left unchecked, it is literally an existential threat to the health of our planet and to our very survival.”
As far as many are concerned, Biden has a fresh perspective on these issues. He sees that climate change issues are connected to economic issues of job creation and a better future for all. In his speech, he explains that the American people cannot do without tackling these matters directly.
“When I think about climate change, the word I think of is jobs, good paying union jobs that will put Americans to work, making the air cleaner for our kids to breathe, restoring our crumbling roads, and bridges, and ports, making it faster, cheaper, and cleaner to transport American made goods all across the country and around the world,” said Biden.
He also added that there will be jobs to build up to 500,000 charging stations across the country which will help America’s automobile industry and make it a leader in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, suggesting that if climate change issues are solved, so will the challenges for the American economy going forward.
At the same time, these climate issues are expected to result in cost savings as it forces consumers and business to evolve. According to Biden, energy retrofitting projects will save the nation a lot of money. Hence, investments in the area will result in tangible benefits to the American economy.
Personally, I would welcome a new US president to the country for it is not just the lives of Americans which are at stake, it is the lives of billions of people around the world which are as well. Climate change issues have taken a backseat with Donald Trump and it is my hope that America elects a responsible president that will institute a wave of measures which are conducive to economic and environmental growth. America, you need a new president.
